Message from President, Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects

The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) is a non-profit organization representing the landscape architectural profession in Singapore. It was established in 1985 with the objective to promote the profession of landscape architecture. In response to the changing needs and demands of the environment and landscape industry, SILA has evolved over the years. In order to achieve the Institute's objective, SILA now functions under three key thrusts:

1. Professional development;
2. Business development; and
3. Research and education support

SILA is dedicated to raising the professional standards of the landscape architects in Singapore. It also helps to profile the business and develop capability, both locally and internationally. We believe in continuous learning and innovation, hence providing education support to nurture future leaders of the profession.

SILA advocates strongly the quality of design and professionalism in the practice of landscape architecture. We need to be aware and up-to-date with social trends and environmental challenges; balance economic development and lifestyle aspirations with ecological needs and sensitivity; and understand how our environment is all interlinked and interdependent.

For Singapore, the next wave of challenges lies in the pursuit of creating a City in a Garden. In order to do this, we need to understand the integral relationship between the quality of green spaces and quality of our living environment; and how our co-existence with biodiversity is vital for the ecology of our urban environment. All this calls for a concerted effort from the landscape industry, including the construction industry of different disciplines, profession and stakeholders.

Within the landscape industry, it is the planning and design process, skills and competencies, knowledge and groundwork that we need to equip ourselves now in order to face the rising and complex environmental challenges in the future.

As this publication continues to be a valuable resource for the industry, let us also build on collective knowledge and quality of our resources. On behalf of SILA, I would like to congratulate Marshall Cavendish Business Information Pte Ltd for another successful edition of the Singapore Builders Directory.
