Message by President, Singapore Electrical Trades Association (SETA)
After three challenging years, the construction industry has bounced back on strong public sector demand. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) estimates that S$30.5 billion worth of contracts were awarded in 2018, an increase of 23% over the previous year. Government contracts accounted for some 60% of the total.
Construction demand is expected to remain high over the next years, underpinned by a stable stream of public sector construction projects. Some of the big-ticket items slated for development are the Punggol Digital District and Jurong Lake District, Changi Airport Terminal 5, and new MRT lines.
As an integral part of the construction industry, the electrical trades will reap the benefits of the industry’s improving health. We are also pleased to hear that government agencies are trying to create more opportunities for Singapore companies by parcelling out large infrastructure projects. The stable and sustained construction demand has given companies added confidence to invest in the future and face up to the many changes in the built environment.
In line with Singapore’s drive to leverage on technology to transform the economy, the BCA is pushing for the adoption of Integrated Digital Delivery, which integrates the entire building lifecycle from design to fabrication and construction, and eventually to operations and maintenance for enhanced efficiency. With Industry 4.0, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D-printing, we can expect many more changes in the built environment in the coming years.
We need to address these challenges as they arise. By levelling up, we can ride the wave of transformation in the construction industry and succeed.
On this hopeful note, I would like to express my appreciation to Marshall Cavendish Business Information Pte Ltd for publishing the Singapore Source Book for Architects, Designers and Building Contractors and making it a comprehensive reference on the building and construction industry.
